Quantum computing is a young but fast-growing field of research and development, and the expected importance of knowledge generation and preparation of application capability in this area is high. However, the preparation time for the integration of quantum computing in companies is longer than for classical computing technologies due to the complexity of this technology.
One of the key challenges is to transfer existing knowledge about the various layers of the quantum computing software stack into a consistent, communicable framework. In addition, the interface issue must be prioritised and quasi-standardisations developed. The quantum computing software stack comprises the layered structure of all components required for the development, operation and meaningful use of quantum computers, from firmware to application, from research to industry.
Based on the state-of-the-art analyses and visions, a tableau of research and development questions will be formulated that addresses the most important research needs for the realisation of the innovation concept. Finally, the harmonisation of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives in a consistent innovation concept is of great importance.
The project follows a multi-stage approach:
The broad involvement of the community in the emerging quantum ecosystem is a central component of the concept development and approach in order to ensure technical resilience and acceptance.
In this preliminary project, a comprehensive innovation concept will be developed that shows how a standardised, widely shared framework of the quantum computing software stack can be developed. The seamless integration of the various layers of the quantum computing software stack is made possible in particular by interface solutions and standardisation, which should cover everything from firmware to algorithms and applications. The innovation concept contributes to the realisation of the potential of quantum technologies from the lab to the fab and forms the basis for the conception of the lead project "QC Next".
