Challenge

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and quantum computing (QC) are two rapidly developing technologies with transformative potential. While AI has already found far-reaching applications in industry and society, quantum computing opens up new possibilities for solving highly complex problems. The special opportunity lies in the synergy of both technologies: quantum computing could significantly increase the performance of AI algorithms, while AI in turn can contribute to the optimization and control of quantum processes. The joint consideration of these two fields of innovation not only enables progress in both disciplines, but also their targeted combination for the development of powerful quantum AI approaches. 

Methodology

The Fraunhofer Research and Innovation Center Heilbronn AQUAI pursues an interdisciplinary approach that does not treat AI and QC in isolation, but as complementary technologies with mutual benefits. The systematic connection of these fields results in innovative research approaches and practical applications for business and society. The focus is on a combination of scientific excellence, transdisciplinary cooperation and a strongly application and transfer-oriented implementation.

The development of new algorithms and practical use cases opens up the potential of quantum computing for AI applications and significantly expands their performance.

The successful implementation of quantum technologies in business and industry requires innovative business models and practice-oriented tools that facilitate and accelerate technology transfer. 

  • Knowledge transfer for quantum AI

Access to quantum AI is facilitated through cooperative education and exchange formats in collaboration with local educational institutions. Scientific findings can thus be translated into practical applications more quickly. 

  • Ecosystem development and empowerment 

A dynamic innovation environment is created where research, business and politics develop joint perspectives. Strategic partnerships and targeted networks strengthen the quantum AI ecosystem and drive sustainable technological developments.
